Hantek oscilloscopes: bandwidth, sample rate and record length

Hantek makes digital storage oscilloscopes in three forms: benchtop, handheld and USB (PC-based), alongside probes, waveform generators and multimeters. Three numbers describe how much signal an oscilloscope can capture: analogue bandwidth, sample rate and record length. Choosing a Hantek model is mostly a matter of matching those figures, the number of channels and the form factor to the signals you need to see.

How a digital oscilloscope captures a signal

A digital storage oscilloscope converts the voltage at its input into numbers, stores them and draws them as a trace. The probe feeds an analogue front end, which sets the usable bandwidth; an analogue-to-digital converter (ADC) samples the signal at the sample rate; and acquisition memory holds the samples up to the record length before they are shown on the instrument's screen or on a PC.

Bandwidth, sample rate and record length: how they relate

Bandwidth is the frequency at which a sine wave is shown 3 dB lower than its true amplitude, so it limits the fastest edges you can see; the probe and the oscilloscope together must cover the signal. Sample rate is how many samples per second the ADC takes, and a common rule of thumb is to choose a sample rate of four to five times the bandwidth. Record length is how many samples fit in memory, and capture time is record length divided by sample rate.

Short record: the DSO-5102P (100 MHz, 1 GSa/s, 40K record length) holds about 40 microseconds at full sample rate. The 6074BD (64K) holds about 65 microseconds.
Long record: the MSO-5202D stores up to 1M samples, and the 6204EU and 6254EU store 128M, so they can keep a long capture without lowering the sample rate.
Shared sample rate: on several models the rate drops when more channels are used. The 2D72 samples at 250 MSa/s on one channel and 125 MSa/s on two.

Rise time follows bandwidth: roughly 0.35 divided by the bandwidth, so a 200 MHz oscilloscope has a rise time near 1.8 ns, as Hantek specifies for the MSO-5202D. If the signal edge is faster than the instrument's rise time, the displayed edge shows the oscilloscope's limit, not the signal.

Benchtop, handheld or USB oscilloscope?

Choose a benchtop Hantek for a dedicated screen and knobs, a handheld for field work, and a USB oscilloscope when a PC already supplies the display and storage. Benchtop models add a large screen and mixed-signal options, handheld models combine an oscilloscope with a multimeter, and USB models offer four channels and up to 250 MHz.

The Automotive Diagnostics 6074BE Kit III is a 4-channel, 70 MHz, 64K kit for vehicle work.

Input channels, triggering and decoding

Channels: two on the benchtop, handheld and entry USB models, four on the 6074BD, 6254BD, 6204EU and 6254EU, and eight on the 1008B. The MSO-5202D and DPO-6202B add 16 logic channels.
Triggering: the USB 4-channel models trigger on edge, pulse, video and alternative modes from any of the four channels. The DSO-5102P and MSO-5202D add slope and overtime triggers, plus external and AC-line sources. The 2D72 and 2D42 use edge triggering.
Serial decoding: the 6074BD and 6254BD include serial bus triggering and decoding, shown as a table. The DPO-6202B offers five protocol triggers and five serial decoding options; see the product page for the protocols.
Vertical resolution: 8 bits on the 6022BE, 6074BD, 6254BD, 6204EU, 6254EU, 2D42, 2D72, DSO-5102P and MSO-5202D, and 12 bits on the 1008B.

PC software

Hantek USB oscilloscopes are operated from Windows software that is available from Hantek's site.

4-channel USB models: Windows 7, 8 and 10, with more than 20 automatic measurements, FFT, pass/fail testing and export to Excel, BMP and JPG.
6022BE: 23 measurement functions, pass/fail check, FFT and saving to text, image, Excel and Word formats.
Programming: the 4-channel USB models come with a library (DLL) and LabVIEW, VB and VC examples for your own test software.
Several scopes on one PC: one computer can connect to multiple oscilloscopes to add channels.

Probes, generators and other Hantek instruments

Probes and accessories include the PP-80 (60 MHz) and PP-300 (300 MHz) probes, the HT8100 100 MHz high-voltage differential probe, the CC-65 current clamp and the HT201 20:1 attenuator. Waveform sources include the DDS-3005, 1025G and HDG3103C. Bench meters include the HDM3055 and HDM3065, and the HSA2016 and HSA2030 are spectrum analysers.

Frequently asked questions

How much bandwidth do I need?

Choose a bandwidth at least three to five times the highest frequency component of your signal. A 100 MHz model such as the DSO-5102P suits digital signals up to roughly 20 to 30 MHz, and a 250 MHz model such as the 6254BD suits faster edges.

Why does record length matter?

Capture time equals record length divided by sample rate. At 1 GSa/s, 64K holds about 65 microseconds while 128M, as on the 6204EU, holds about 0.13 seconds, which suits long captures of slow events with fast detail.

Do I need a PC to use a Hantek USB oscilloscope?

Yes. USB models such as the 6022BE have no screen and use Hantek's Windows software on your PC for display, measurement and storage. Benchtop and handheld models work on their own.

Can I decode serial buses?

Yes, on selected models. The 6074BD and 6254BD include serial bus triggering and decoding, and the DPO-6202B offers five serial decoding options. Check the product page for the protocols supported.
