mikroBUS and Click boards: plug-in modules for embedded designs

mikroBUS is MikroElektronika's (MIKROE) standard socket for add-on boards, and the Click board is the module that plugs into it. A mikroBUS socket carries SPI, I2C, UART, analogue, PWM, interrupt and reset lines plus 3.3 V and 5 V rails on a pair of 1x8 headers, so one sensor, transceiver or driver board can move between development boards without rewiring. MIKROE also supplies the development boards, the mikroProg and CODEGRIP programmers and debuggers, and the NECTO Studio IDE with the mikroSDK libraries.

How a mikroBUS socket works

The mikroBUS socket is a pair of 1x8 female headers on a 100 mil pitch, so it also suits breadboards. The left header carries AN, RST, the four SPI lines (CS, SCK, MISO, MOSI), +3.3 V and GND. The right header carries PWM, INT, the UART pair (RX, TX), the I2C pair (SCL, SDA), +5 V and GND. Every Click board uses the same positions, which is why a host board with a mikroBUS socket can run any Click board that its firmware supports.

Click boards and mikroBUS adapters

A Click board is a small add-on module, typically one sensor, transceiver or driver IC on a mikroBUS footprint. Which of the socket's lines a given board actually uses depends on its chip: the Temp&Hum Click uses I2C with a 3.3 V ST HTS221 sensor, while the CAN SPI 5V Click uses SPI with an MCP2551 CAN transceiver and needs 5 V. Always check the supply voltage on the board's page against the host socket.

Hosts without a native mikroBUS socket can be given one. The Arduino UNO Click Shield adds two mikroBUS sockets to an Arduino UNO, the Raspberry Pi 3 Click Shield does the same for a Raspberry Pi 3, and the mikroBUS Shuttle extends a socket on a flat cable. The Click Board Analyzer plugs in between a Click board and its host to show pin logic states (up to 4 MHz sampling) and voltages over USB.

Development boards, programmers and software working together

A typical MIKROE setup has four parts: NECTO Studio on the PC, a programmer/debugger, a development board with the target MCU, and Click boards in its mikroBUS sockets. The mikroSDK libraries give each Click board a driver, so the same application code can be rebuilt for a different MCU.

Write and debug code on the PC, flash it through the programmer, and add hardware by plugging Click boards into the sockets.

Programmers and debuggers

MIKROE sells two programmer families: the mikroProg series and CODEGRIP. Each mikroProg is aimed at one MCU family; the STM32 version, for example, is driven by mikroProg Suite for ARM. CODEGRIP is a newer programmer and hardware debugger that supports ARM Cortex-M, RISC-V, PIC, dsPIC, PIC32 and AVR, connects over USB-C or Wi-Fi, and is available as a standalone unit or an on-board module. CODEGRIP units are not listed in this catalogue at present; ask our engineers if you need one.

mikroSDK: an open-source, modular framework that abstracts the hardware so application code can be reused across MCU families.
Package Manager: fetches libraries, board definitions and examples.
NECTO Designer: visual GUI builder that generates LVGL code.

What is the mikroBUS pinout?

mikroBUS has two 1x8 headers. The left carries AN, RST, CS, SCK, MISO, MOSI, +3.3 V and GND; the right carries PWM, INT, RX, TX, SCL, SDA, +5 V and GND. Every Click board uses the same positions.

Will any Click board work on any mikroBUS socket?

Electrically the sockets match, but you must check the supply voltage the board needs (3.3 V or 5 V) and that firmware or a mikroSDK driver exists for your MCU. For example, the CAN SPI 5V Click needs 5 V, while the Temp&Hum Click runs at 3.3 V.

How do I add mikroBUS to an Arduino or Raspberry Pi?

Which programmer do I need?

mikroProg variants are made per MCU family, such as MikroProg for STM32 or MikroProg for PIC, dsPIC and PIC32. Choose the one that matches your target MCU. CODEGRIP covers several architectures in one unit.

Do I have to use NECTO Studio?

No. Click boards are ordinary hardware and can be driven from other toolchains, but NECTO Studio with mikroSDK provides ready-made Click board drivers and examples.

Can I debug a Click board while it is plugged in?

Yes. The Click Board Analyzer sits between the Click board and the host socket and shows pin states and voltages over USB.
