Micsig probes and scopes: measuring floating power circuits

Micsig makes touch-screen oscilloscopes and the probes that go with them: tablet and 14 inch instruments from 100 to 500 MHz, high-voltage differential probes, optical-fibre isolated probes and current probes. The range is built for power electronics and field work, where an engineer needs to measure a floating node, a mains-connected circuit or a fast switching edge without putting the instrument or the operator at risk.

Why floating measurements need a differential or isolated probe

A differential or isolated probe is needed whenever neither point you want to measure is at ground. The BNC shield of an oscilloscope input is normally tied to the instrument's ground, and on a mains-powered oscilloscope that ground is connected to protective earth. In a half-bridge, the switch node between the high-side and low-side devices swings from 0 V to the full bus voltage, so clipping a ground lead to it forces the node to earth through the oscilloscope.

A ground-referenced probe ties the floating node to earth; a differential probe measures across it.

Common-mode rejection ratio (CMRR) states how much of a voltage common to both inputs the probe suppresses, and it falls as frequency rises. Micsig specifies the DP series at over 80 dB at DC, over 60 dB at 100 kHz, over 30 dB at 10 MHz and over 26 dB at 100 MHz. At the fast edges of a modern half-bridge, that is where common-mode feed-through starts to disturb a small gate-source signal. The SigOFIT optical-fibre isolated probe removes the electrical connection altogether: the signal travels on fibre and the probe head is powered by laser, giving 180 dB CMRR at DC and over 100 dB at 1 GHz bandwidth, with an 85 kVpk common-mode voltage rating.

Choosing between differential, optical and current probes

Use a differential probe to read a high voltage across two points, an optical isolated probe when the common-mode swing is fast and large, and a current probe when you need the current without breaking the circuit. The stocked differential probes are the DP series; the isolated probe is the SigOFIT; the clamp is the ACP1000.

Pick the measurement first (voltage, fast common-mode voltage or current), then the instrument.

Bandwidth and attenuation: matching the probe to the signal

Choose the probe bandwidth to match the oscilloscope and the edge speed, then choose the attenuation range that puts the signal on the upper part of the scale. Each DP model has two ranges, for example 70 V and 700 V (20X and 200X) on the DP700 class, and a lower range gives a clearer trace for smaller signals. The SigOFIT uses interchangeable attenuator tips from 10X to 10000X, giving differential ranges from ±10 V to ±5000 V, so the same probe head can read a 15 V gate drive and a kilovolt drain.

Bandwidth: DP probes run from 100 to 500 MHz and SigOFIT probes (MOIP200P, MOIP350P, MOIP500P, MOIP1000P) from 200 MHz to 1 GHz. A probe slower than the oscilloscope limits the system.
Voltage class: DP models are available for 700 V, 1500 V, 3000 V and 7000 V peak. Choose the class above your worst-case voltage, never close to it.
CAT rating: a measurement category states the transient overvoltage the instrument is designed for. The ACP1000 is rated CAT III 600 V. Rated voltage to ground differs between DP models, so check the marking on the probe and the product page before connecting to mains.
Input loading: DP probes have differential input impedance from 5 MΩ with 2 pF (DP700 class) to 60 MΩ with 0.78 pF (DP7000 class).

Why a tablet oscilloscope

A touch-screen oscilloscope puts a full instrument in a battery-powered case, which suits fieldwork on motor drives, inverters and vehicles. The TO series is a 10.1 inch tablet with a built-in 7500 mAh battery, and the ETO3000 series is a 14 inch tablet with a 13,500 mAh battery. The MHO3 series and MDO series share the 14 inch 1920 x 1200 touch screen. The ETO, MHO3 and MDO series use the Mic-OPI probe interface, which recognises compatible probes automatically.

Oscilloscope inputs are not a substitute for a differential or isolated probe: a direct BNC input has a limited maximum input voltage and is referenced to the instrument ground, so use the input rating in the manual as the limit and a probe for anything higher or floating.

Frequently asked questions

Why can I not just clip the probe ground to a floating node?

The ground lead of a single-ended probe connects to the oscilloscope ground, which on a mains-powered instrument is protective earth. Clipping it to a node that swings relative to earth shorts that node to earth. Use a DP series differential probe or a SigOFIT isolated probe instead.

Differential probe or optical isolated probe?

A differential probe such as the DP series works well at moderate frequencies, but its CMRR falls to over 26 dB at 100 MHz. The SigOFIT keeps CMRR over 100 dB at 1 GHz bandwidth, which matters when the switch node moves in nanoseconds.

Do the Micsig oscilloscopes have isolated channels?

No isolated-input specification is published for the TO, ETO, MDO or MHO3 series. Isolation between channels is not the same as galvanic isolation from the circuit. For galvanic isolation use the SigOFIT probe.

Which probes work with the oscilloscopes?

The DP, SigOFIT and ACP1000 probes have BNC outputs, and the SigOFIT is specified for BNC inputs on other brands of oscilloscope too. The ETO, MHO3 and MDO series also have the Mic-OPI probe interface.

Which tablet oscilloscope should I choose?
