The Promira I2C Active Level 2 Application (TP600210) raises a Total Phase Promira Serial Platform to High-speed mode I2C, running master and slave at up to 3.4 MHz. It doubles the configurable GPIO to twelve (ten while using I2C) and keeps everything in Level 1: multi-master support, a 256-byte slave response, clock stretching and SMBus, PMBus and IPMI compatibility. It is the licence for validating and programming High-speed mode I2C parts at their rated clock.
High-Speed Mode I2C to 3.4 MHz
As a High-speed I2C host adapter, Level 2 drives and answers the bus in Standard mode, Fast-mode Plus (1 Mbps) and High-speed mode (3.4 MHz). Testing an HS-mode sensor or memory at 3.4 MHz shows the timing margins and bus loading of the real design, which a 400 kHz or 1 MHz adapter cannot reveal. It also cuts programming time on large I2C EEPROMs, where a higher clock directly shortens the cycle on a production line.
Twelve GPIO for Fixtures and Side-Band Signals
Up to twelve configurable GPIO, ten while the I2C pins are in use, let one Promira drive resets, interrupts, enable lines and strapping pins while it talks to the device under test. On a test fixture that removes a second I/O card and keeps bus traffic and control signals under one API and one timebase.
Built on I2C Active Level 1
Level 2 is installed on top of the I2C Active Level 1 licence, which Total Phase lists as a prerequisite. Everything Level 1 does carries over: multi-master transmit and receive, asynchronous slave transmit and receive with a response of up to 256 bytes, 10-bit addressing, repeated start, inter-bit and inter-byte clock stretching, and DDC, SMBus, PMBus, SBBus, IPMI and TWI compatibility.
Software and API
Control Center Serial gives interactive control of the bus and GPIO. Flash Center programs and verifies I2C and SPI memory devices (Windows and Linux). The free Promira Software API covers C, C#, Python, .NET, VB.NET and VB6, with a LabVIEW driver for test stations, and the Promira Aardvark Wrapper API runs code written for the Aardvark API while you port it. Promira software runs on Windows 10 and 11, Linux and macOS 13 or later.

Limitations
- This is a software licence only. It runs on the Promira Serial Platform (£1,040 ex VAT), which is sold separately and must be in place before the licence can be installed.
- Level 2 requires the I2C Active Level 1 licence (£120 ex VAT) on the same Promira. From a bare platform the two I2C licences total £770 ex VAT, plus the platform.
- If your devices run at 1 MHz or below and six GPIO are enough, Level 1 alone does the job.

A High-speed I2C host adapter earns its price when the part on your board is specified for High-speed mode, or when a fixture needs more than six GPIO. For Fast-mode Plus and below, stay with Level 1.
Typical Applications
Characterising a 3.4 MHz HS-mode temperature sensor against its datasheet timing. Programming large I2C EEPROMs at High-speed mode to shorten production cycle time. Running a PMBus power-sequencing test that also toggles enable and power-good lines from the Promira's GPIO.
Level 2 suits hardware validation engineers working with HS-mode parts, and test engineers building fixtures that need bus control and side-band I/O from one adapter.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does this include the Promira hardware?
No. It is an application licence for a Promira Serial Platform you already own or order with it. The Promira Serial Platform is £1,040 ex VAT.
Do I need I2C Active Level 1 as well?
Yes. Total Phase lists I2C Active Level 1 as a prerequisite for Level 2, so both licences must be on the same Promira. Level 1 is £120 ex VAT.
What is the maximum I2C speed?
3.4 MHz master and slave in High-speed mode, with Standard mode and Fast-mode Plus (1 Mbps) also supported.
Can one Promira run several applications?
Yes. Total Phase states that a Promira Serial Platform can hold more than one application licence, so the I2C, SPI and analysis applications can all sit on the same unit. Each licence is added as a licence file through the Promira's admin interface, alongside firmware updates.
