Overview

Total Phase Advanced Cable Tester v2

The Total Phase Advanced Cable Tester v2 (ACT v2) provides comprehensive electrical screening of USB, HDMI and DisplayPort cables for production or lab QA. It verifies wiring (opens/shorts), measures DC resistance on power/ground and data lines, and performs signal-integrity checks with eye diagrams up to 12.8 Gbps per channel. Results are presented instantly on the unit and via a web interface, with local storage for over one million test records.

Interchangeable connector modules support a wide range of cables. Choose USB Type-C, USB Standard-A/B/Micro-B, HDMI Type-A and DisplayPort by installing the relevant modules or bundles. For USB-C, the ACT v2 also validates E-Marker data and PD-related fields, helping you catch mis-declared cable capabilities before they cause field issues.

If you plan to screen different cable families, consider adding the ACT v2 module bundles: USB-C Bundle and Video (HDMI/DP) Bundle. For protocol-level debug of devices uncovered by cable tests, see Beagle USB 480 Power Protocol Analyser and Promira Serial Platform.

De-risk high-speed launches

Eye-diagram and DCR screening catches marginal cables early, reducing post-bring-up firefighting across USB/HDMI/DP projects.

Scale production QA simply

Auto-start testing, pass/fail alarms and web reports slot into EOL fixtures without complex scripting or expensive lab instruments.

Prove supplier quality

Per-cable records with wiring maps and measurements support audits, RMA decisions and continuous improvement with vendors.

Questions and Answers

8 questions
  • How Fast Is a Typical Test?

Total Phase optimises the tester for fast testing to meet production requirements, which supports rapid end-of-line throughput. Total Phase does not publish per-test times.

  • Which Cables Are Supported Out of the Box?
  • Can I Export Results for Traceability?

Yes. Export test reports as JSON data files, print personalised reports, and store up to 1,000,000 results locally (oldest overwritten first), which is useful for audits and yield tracking.

  • How Does It Help with IR-drop Issues?

Milliohm-level DCR measurements on VBUS/GND identify excessive resistance that leads to voltage droop under load.

  • How Do I Add Support for New Cable Types?

Install the matching connector modules. See the Accessories Catalogue.

  • What Failures Does the ACT V2 Detect?
    • Opens and shorts
    • Mis-routing
    • DC resistance issues on power, ground and low-speed lines (high-speed data lines are checked by signal integrity instead)
    • Signal-integrity margin problems, via eye diagrams up to 12.8 Gbps per channel

  • Does It Validate USB-C E-Markers and PD Fields?

Yes. It reads and checks E-Marker data so declared cable capabilities align with actual construction.

Answered by John LeggUpdated 12 Oct 2026
  • Is This a Replacement for Formal Compliance Testing?

No. It’s a manufacturing/lab screening tool. Standards bodies (USB-IF, HDMI, VESA) still require design compliance testing; ACT v2 helps keep production quality consistent.
