Convert Standard J-Link to Renesas E1 Connector

The SEGGER RL78 14-Pin Programming Adapter seamlessly converts the standard 20-pin 0.1" J-Link connector to the Renesas-defined 14-pin E1 connector, enabling efficient flash programming of RL78 microcontrollers. This essential adapter bridges the gap between SEGGER's Flasher programming tools and Renesas RL78 target hardware.

Selectable Target Supply Voltage

The adapter provides flexible power options with jumper-selectable 3.3V or 5V supply voltage. When the supply option is jumpered, the target is powered via the VTREF connection, eliminating the need for external power during programming operations.
Important: This adapter is exclusively for flash programming. It cannot be used with J-Link debug probes and does not support debugging functionality for RL78 devices.

Wiring Quick-Start

Essential Connections

14-pin E1 connector pinout diagram
Pin 1: GND Pin 2: GND Pin 3: VDD Pin 4: RSTPU (Pull-up resistor for reset) Pin 5: TOOL0 (Bidirectional data line) Pin 6: RESET_IN Pin 8: VSS Pin 10: RESET_OUT Pin 12: GND Pin 13: RESET_OUT Pin 14: GND

TOOL0 Pull-up Configuration

RL78 devices use open-drain TOOL0 pins requiring external pull-up resistors. While evaluation boards typically include these resistors, the adapter features an additional solder bridge between VTREF and TOOL0 to accommodate targets without built-in pull-ups.
Recommended pull-up resistance: 1kΩ to VTREF

Programming Interface Specifications

Engineer Q&A

Questions and Answers

10 questions
  • Can This Adapter Power My Target Board During Programming?

Yes, when the supply jumper is configured, the adapter can provide either 3.3V or 5V to power the target via the VTREF connection. SEGGER publishes no current rating for the adapter; the Flasher's own target supply limit applies (Flasher PRO: up to 400mA at 5V).

Answered by John LeggUpdated 12 Oct 2026
  • Is This Adapter Compatible with All SEGGER Flasher Models?
  • What Programming Protocols Does the Adapter Support?

The adapter uses the RL78 TOOL0 programming pin and is for flash programming.

Answered by John LeggUpdated 12 Oct 2026
  • Can I Use This Adapter for In-Circuit Programming?

Yes, this adapter is designed for in-circuit programming applications. It allows programming of RL78 devices that are already soldered onto target PCBs through the 14-pin E1 connector interface.

Answered by John LeggUpdated 12 Oct 2026
  • How Do I Connect This Adapter to My Programming Setup?

    To connect the adapter:

    1. Connect the 20-pin connector to your SEGGER Flasher.
    2. Connect the 14-pin ribbon cable to your target board's E1 connector.
    3. Set the voltage selection jumper as needed.
    4. Make sure the ground connections are sound.

  • What RL78 Microcontrollers Does This Adapter Support?

    The adapter supports the RL78 series SEGGER lists: D1A; F12, F13, F14, F15; G10, G11, G12, G13, G14; G1A, G1C, G1D, G1E, G1F, G1G, G1H; I1A, I1B, I1C, I1D, I1E; L12, L13, L1A, L1C. The connector is the standard 14-pin E1 header defined by Renesas.

Answered by John LeggUpdated 12 Oct 2026
  • How Do I Select Between 3.3V and 5V Target Supply Voltage?

The adapter features a jumper that allows selection between 3.3V and 5V supply voltage. When the supply option is jumpered, the target receives power via the VTREF connection. Remove the jumper if your target has independent power supply.

Answered by John LeggUpdated 12 Oct 2026
  • Do I Need External Pull-Up Resistors for the TOOL0 Line?

RL78 devices need pull-up resistors on the TOOL0 line. Most evaluation boards include them, and for targets without built-in pull-ups the adapter also provides a solder bridge between VTREF and TOOL0.

  • Does the Adapter Come with a Cable?

SEGGER's product photo shows a 14-pin ribbon cable; delivery contents are not listed on segger.com.
