Total Phase makes USB-connected host adapters and protocol analysers for I2C, SPI, eSPI, USB and CAN. A host adapter lets a PC act as a bus master or slave to program, control and test a device; a protocol analyser sits on the bus and records what other devices say. Total Phase supplies the hardware, free Control Center and Data Center software, and a royalty-free API for your own test scripts.
A host adapter is active: it drives the bus, so the PC can read an EEPROM, program a flash or exercise a sensor. A protocol analyser is passive: it listens to traffic between two other devices and decodes it without transmitting. Total Phase sells both, and the Promira Serial Platform can do either depending on the applications loaded.
For I2C and SPI the choice is Aardvark, Cheetah or Promira to drive a device, and Beagle I2C/SPI or Promira to analyse one. Total Phase USB analysis is covered by the Beagle USB range, CAN by the Komodo CAN Duo, and eSPI by a Promira with the eSPI Analysis application.
| Model | Role | Bus | Key figures | Host connection |

The Aardvark suits general I2C and SPI development, the Cheetah suits fast SPI flash work, and the Promira covers faster I2C, Quad SPI and remote use. The Aardvark speaks both I2C and single-lane SPI. The Cheetah is SPI only and targets large memory writes and production flash programming. The Promira is an FPGA-based platform whose capabilities are set by licensed applications, which you can add later without changing the hardware:
Aardvark and Cheetah need an accessory board such as the Level Shifter Board for voltage translation; the Promira has level shifting built in.
Beagle analysers capture traffic non-intrusively and stream it to Data Center. The Beagle I2C/SPI Analyser decodes I2C and SPI. For USB, the Beagle USB 12 covers low and full speed, the Beagle USB 480 adds high speed with an on-board buffer, the Beagle USB 480 Power Ultimate also records VBUS current and voltage, and the Beagle USB 5000 v2 Ultimate adds USB 3.0 SuperSpeed. For wiring, see the Beagle USB connections guide.
The Komodo CAN Duo is a two-channel USB-to-CAN interface that can transmit on one channel while monitoring on the other. Each channel has independent galvanic isolation and runs up to 1 Mbps, and the unit has 8 configurable GPIO lines. Accessories include the CAN Bus Terminator, the CAN Bus Split Cable and the CAN/I2C Activity Board Pro. Pin assignments are on the Komodo CAN pinout page.
Total Phase software is free to download and runs on Windows, Linux and macOS.
Connector layouts are on the Aardvark pinout and I2C and SPI pinouts pages. Split cables such as the 10-pin Split Cable, the Split Cable with Grabbers and the 34-pin Split Cable break the connector out to your target.
A host adapter such as the Aardvark drives the bus as a master or slave so you can control a device. A protocol analyser such as the Beagle I2C/SPI Analyser only listens and decodes traffic between other devices.
Choose the Aardvark for I2C and SPI up to 800 kHz and 8 MHz, the Cheetah for SPI up to 40 MHz, and the Promira for I2C to 3.4 MHz, SPI to 80 MHz, Dual and Quad SPI, built-in level shifting and Ethernet.
Yes. Control Center and Data Center are free downloads and run on Windows, Linux and macOS. Promira capabilities are unlocked by purchasing applications for the platform.
Use the Beagle USB 12 for low and full speed, the Beagle USB 480 for high speed, the Beagle USB 480 Power Ultimate if you also need VBUS current and voltage, and the Beagle USB 5000 v2 Ultimate for USB 3.0 SuperSpeed.
Yes. Total Phase provides a royalty-free API for its adapters and analysers, with language support that varies by product (for example C, Python, Visual Basic and C# for the Promira). See the product page for your model.
Yes. The Komodo CAN Duo has two independently isolated channels, so one can transmit while the other monitors, at up to 1 Mbps per channel.
