Maynuo electronic loads: programmable DC load testing

Maynuo makes programmable DC electronic loads (the M97 and M98 series) and programmable DC power supplies (the M88 series). An electronic load sinks current from a battery, charger, power supply or LED driver in a controlled way, so you can measure capacity, regulation and transient response without a bank of resistors. Maynuo loads run from 150 W to 6,000 W in the range we stock, hold current, voltage, resistance or power, and are controlled from the front panel or a PC over serial interfaces.

How a Maynuo electronic load tests a battery

A Maynuo electronic load tests a battery by discharging it at a constant current until the voltage reaches a cut-off you set. In the M97 series the load runs in constant current (CC) mode, stops automatically when the battery voltage falls to the programmed threshold, and reports the capacity, up to 999 Ah. The Maynuo M9712 and Maynuo M9811 both include battery and short-circuit test functions.

Load modes: CC, CV, CR, CW and combined modes

Maynuo M97 and M98 loads have six operating modes: constant current (CC), constant voltage (CV), constant resistance (CR), constant power (CW), and the combined CC+CV and CR+CV modes. In CC the load draws a set current whatever the input voltage; in CV it draws what it must to hold the source at a set voltage; in CR the current is proportional to the input voltage; in CW the product of voltage and current stays fixed. The combined modes add a voltage limit to CC or CR, which protects a source from a current surge. A soft-start setting from 1 ms to 1,000 ms controls how quickly the load takes up current when it is switched on.

Dynamic (transient) testing

Dynamic mode switches the load between two current levels to show how a power supply or converter responds to a changing load. The M97 series offers continuous, pulse and trigger dynamic modes: continuous repeats the two-level cycle, pulse runs a single pulse, and trigger switches between the levels on an external trigger signal. Maynuo specifies a dynamic frequency of 0 to 25 kHz and a current rise speed of 2.5 A/us as the basic figure, with 5 A/us listed for the higher-power M9715 to M9718 loads. Rising-edge and falling-edge dynamic testing are both supported.

Continuous dynamic mode: the load alternates between two current levels, with a set dwell at each.

Short-circuit, protection and remote sense

The M97 and M98 loads include a short-circuit test mode, which simulates a short circuit to check how a power supply's protection responds, and standard over-current, over-voltage, over-power, over-temperature and reverse-polarity protection. Remote voltage compensation (remote sense) lets the load measure the voltage at the source terminals rather than at the load end of the leads, which matters for low-voltage, high-current sources. The loads also provide external trigger connections and a current waveform monitoring terminal.

Programmable power supplies: the M88 series

The Maynuo M88 series are single-output programmable DC power supplies from 150 W to 1,125 W, with constant-voltage and constant-current output and automatic crossover. The Maynuo M8811 has an output rise time under 10 ms. They are programmed and read back over the digital interface, so pair one with an M97 load to check regulation and efficiency of a converter. Ratings across the family run from 6 V at 60 A to 150 V at 1 A.

Software

Maynuo provides Windows monitoring software for the M97/M98 and M88 series, with test step editing and Excel report output, and a LabVIEW driver for the M97/M98 series. A multi-channel solar cell test software is also offered.

What are CC, CV, CR and CW on a Maynuo electronic load?

They are the four basic load modes: constant current, constant voltage, constant resistance and constant power (Maynuo writes constant power as CW). The M97 and M98 loads also offer combined CC+CV and CR+CV modes, which limit the current while the load holds a set voltage. The Maynuo M9712 is a typical example.

Can a Maynuo load test battery capacity?

Yes. In battery test mode the load discharges at a set constant current until the battery voltage falls to a cut-off you set, then stops and records the capacity, up to 999 Ah. The Maynuo M9712 and the Maynuo M9811 both include this function.
