How Does The Headphone AMP 2 Click Board™ Work?
The Headphone AMP 2 Click Board™ is based on the TS2007FC, a monolithic, fully-differential input/output, class-D power amplifier from STMicroelectronics. The TS2007FC can drive up to 2.3W into 4Ω load at 5V, achieving better efficiency than typical class-AB audio power amplifiers. It includes a common mode feedback loop that controls the output bias value to average it at half of the power supply value in the DC common mode input voltage range. This feature allows the board always to have a maximum output voltage swing and, consequently, maximizes the output power. In addition, as the load is connected differentially, compared to a single-ended topology, the output is four times higher for the same power supply voltage.
The Headphone AMP 2 Click Board™ establishes communication with MCU using two pins on the mikroBUS™ socket. The GS pin of the mikroBUS™ socket controls the TS2007FC's differential gain, set to either 6 or 12dB depending on the logic level of the GS pin. It is also possible to set the Click board™ in Standby mode, depending on the set logic level (active low) on the STB pin of the mikroBUS™ socket. When the Standby mode control pin is set to a high logic state, the time required to put the two output stages into high impedance and the internal circuitry in Shutdown mode is typically 1ms. This time decreases the gain and avoids any pop noise during Shutdown. Furthermore, the TS2007FC has several protection features like thermal Shutdown and short circuit protection allowing a reliable operation.
The Headphone AMP 2 Click Board™ can operate with either 3.3V or 5V logic voltage levels selected via the VCC SEL jumper. This way, both 3.3V and 5V capable MCUs can use the communication lines properly. However, the Click board™ comes equipped with a library containing easy-to-use functions and an example code that can be used, as a reference, for further development.
