SPECTRAN: real-time spectrum analysis from 9 kHz to 18 GHz

SPECTRAN is Aaronia AG's family of real-time spectrum analysers, controlled by the RTSA-Suite PRO software on a Windows or Linux PC. Paired with Aaronia's HyperLOG, OmniLOG and BicoLOG antennas and near-field probes, a SPECTRAN lets an engineer capture a continuous, gapless block of spectrum, find short or intermittent emissions, and locate EMC problems on the bench or in the field. Our Aaronia spectrum analysers collection lists the analysers on their own.

How a SPECTRAN measurement chain works

A SPECTRAN measurement chain has three parts: an antenna or near-field probe picks up the signal, the SPECTRAN digitises it, and RTSA-Suite PRO displays, records and analyses it on the PC. The analyser connects to the PC over USB (SPECTRAN V6 ECO models use a single USB 3 Type-C connection that also powers the unit). The SPECTRAN V6 MOBILE instead has the PC built in, with a 15.6 inch touchscreen.

Antenna or probe, SPECTRAN, then RTSA-Suite PRO: the same chain applies from bench EMC work to field surveys.

Real-time versus swept spectrum analysis

A real-time spectrum analyser captures a continuous block of spectrum without gaps, while a conventional swept analyser looks at one narrow band at a time. The block width is the real-time bandwidth (RTBW): signals inside it are captured continuously, so short pulses, bursts and intermittent interference are recorded rather than missed between sweep steps. Sweep speed describes how quickly a SPECTRAN steps those blocks across a wider range when you need more than one block of spectrum.

A brief pulse that falls between swept observations is missed; a gapless real-time block records it.

SPECTRAN V6 at a glance

The SPECTRAN V6 range covers entry-level ECO analysers, PLUS analysers with wider real-time bandwidth, and a portable MOBILE model. Values below are from Aaronia's published specifications; where sources differ we point you to the product page.

The SPECTRAN V6 CommandCenter series (10 MHz to 8 GHz) and the SPECTRAN V4-C handheld analyser (9 kHz to 6 GHz) are also listed in this catalogue; see their product pages for full specifications.

Key specifications

Real-time bandwidth options: the PLUS models can be extended beyond their standard RTBW; the 120MHz RTBW for Spectran V6 upgrade is available separately.
Noise floor: Aaronia quotes a typical displayed average noise level of -170 dBm/Hz with the internal preamplifier enabled. An Internal Pre-Amp for Spectran V6 is sold as an option.
Connectors: SMA (50 ohm) for RF, with SMB connectors for trigger, reference clock and GPS on the PLUS range.
Options and accessories: an SMA Limiter, Internal GPS, Outdoor Case, WiFi 6E Extension and Extended Temperature Range option are available for SPECTRAN V6.

Antennas and near-field probes

Aaronia antennas connect directly to a SPECTRAN and are chosen by frequency range and use: directional log-periodic antennas for emission measurements, omnidirectional antennas for site surveys, and near-field probes for locating interference sources on a board.

Product	Type	Frequency range	Use
HyperLOG 7000 series	Directional log-periodic	700 MHz to 6 GHz (HyperLOG 7060: 5 dBi gain, SMA female)	Compact directional measurements
HyperLOG 4000 series	Directional log-periodic	400 MHz to 6 GHz	EMC emission testing
HyperLOG 3000 series	Directional log-periodic	380 MHz to 35 GHz across the series	Wideband directional measurements
HyperLOG 6000 series	Directional log-periodic	From 680 MHz; see product page	Wideband directional measurements
OmniLOG PRO	Omnidirectional, vertical linear polarisation	150 MHz to 18 GHz across the series (usable from 80 MHz)	Omnidirectional measurements and site surveys
BicoLOG 20100E	Biconical, EMC version	20 MHz to 1 GHz	Low-frequency EMC measurements
PBS1 near-field probe set	5 probes: 4 magnetic field, 1 electric field	See product page	Pinpointing interference sources

The OmniLOG PRO N and OmniLOG PRO N-H variants use N connectors. The catalogue also lists the PowerLOG PRO 30X00 EMI antenna and the IsoLOG 3D Mobile PRO.

RTSA-Suite PRO software

RTSA-Suite PRO is Aaronia's spectrum analysis software for SPECTRAN V6, running on Windows and Linux. The basic version is included with the analyser, and further blocks can be added when an application needs them.

Display and recording: gapless real-time 3D view and unlimited recording time, with IQ data capture.
Analysis: real-time demodulation, a real-time 3D trigger, and automatic pulse classification (including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GSM and DECT).
Multiple devices: several SPECTRAN V6 analysers can be used at once.
Optional blocks: Aaronia offers 30-day free trials or rentals of additional blocks. Options sold here include the Tracking Generator, Channel Power Measurement, Spectral Background Mask, Receiver Band Sequencer, Remote Configuration, Signal Strength Locator and GPS Disciplined Time Base.

Typical applications

EMC pre-compliance: locating emission sources on a product with the PBS1 probes, then checking radiated emissions with a log-periodic or biconical antenna (see also the Aaronia Real-time EMC Bundle)
Capturing intermittent and pulsed signals that a swept analyser can miss
Wireless and RF development: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and cellular band analysis
Field surveys and interference hunting with a portable setup such as the SPECTRAN V6 MOBILE

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between real-time bandwidth and sweep speed?

Real-time bandwidth is the width of spectrum a SPECTRAN captures continuously without gaps, for example 44 MHz on the SPECTRAN V6 ECO 100XA-6 or 160 MHz on the SPECTRAN V6 PLUS 2000XA-6. Sweep speed is how fast the analyser steps across a wider frequency range.

Which SPECTRAN V6 should I choose?

Choose by frequency range and real-time bandwidth. The ECO models start at 9 kHz and reach 6 GHz or 18 GHz, the PLUS models offer 80 to 160 MHz of real-time bandwidth from 10 MHz to 6 GHz, and the SPECTRAN V6 MOBILE has a built-in PC for field use.

Is the software included?

Yes. The basic version of RTSA-Suite PRO is included with SPECTRAN V6 analysers, and additional blocks can be purchased, trialled for 30 days or rented.

Which antenna should I use for EMC pre-compliance?

For radiated emissions, a log-periodic antenna such as the HyperLOG 4000 series (400 MHz to 6 GHz) or the BicoLOG 20100E (20 MHz to 1 GHz) fits the frequency range. To find where on a board an emission originates, use the PBS1 near-field probe set.

Which operating systems does RTSA-Suite PRO run on?

Windows and Linux, with macOS reported as in development by Aaronia.
