Overview

Professional ARM Cortex SWD Programming Adapter

The Tag Connect ARM20-CTX adapter bridges the gap between traditional 20-pin ARM JTAG debuggers and modern compact TC2030 footprints, enabling efficient Serial Wire Debug (SWD) programming for ARM Cortex microcontrollers. This professional interface adapter eliminates the need for bulky traditional connectors whilst maintaining full SWD functionality.

Significant PCB Space Savings

By converting from a standard 20-pin 0.1" ARM connector to Tag-Connect's patented 6-pin TC2030 Plug-of-Nails™ footprint, engineers achieve an impressive 84% reduction in PCB real estate. The TC2030 footprint occupies merely 0.02 square inches - approximately the same space as an 0805 resistor.

Compatible Debugging Solutions

The ARM20-CTX works seamlessly with popular debugging platforms including Segger J-Link, ST-LINK/V2, ST-LINK/V3, PEmicro Cyclone Universal, and other ARM Cortex SWD-compatible debuggers. The adapter maps essential SWD signals: SWDIO, SWCLK, nRESET, and SWO to the compact TC2030 interface.

For enhanced functionality, pair with TC2030-IDC legged cables for secure debugging connections, or TC2030-IDC-NL no-legs variants for rapid production programming. Consider the complementary ARM20-CTX-M for Lauterbach programmers requiring female IDC connections.

This adapter represents the optimal solution for professional embedded developers seeking to reduce PCB costs, save board space, and maintain reliable SWD debugging capabilities across ARM Cortex-M processor designs.

Professional 20-Pin ARM to 6-Pin SWD Adapter

The ARM20-CTX adapter transforms standard 20-pin ARM debugger connections into the compact 6-pin Tag Connect TC2030 interface, saving 84% of PCB space whilst maintaining full SWD debugging capability. This adapter enables seamless integration between professional debuggers like Segger J-Link, ST-Link/V2, and PEmicro tools with space-constrained target boards.

Wiring Quick-Start

Standard Connection: 20-pin male connector → debugger, 6-pin IDC connector → TC2030 cable
20-Pin ARM Connector 6-Pin TC2030 Footprint Function
Pin 1 (VCC) Pin 1 Target reference voltage
Pin 7 (SWDIO/TMS) Pin 2 Serial wire data I/O
Pin 15 (nRESET) Pin 3 Target reset signal
Pin 9 (SWCLK/TCK) Pin 4 Serial wire clock
Pins 4,6,8,10,12 (GND) Pin 5 Ground reference
Pin 13 (SWO/TDO) Pin 6 Serial wire output (optional)
PCB Integration: Target boards require TC2030 footprint (0.05" pitch) consisting of 6 contact pads and 3 alignment holes. No mating connector needed on PCB.

Questions and Answers

12 questions
  • Is the ARM20-CTX Suitable for High-volume Production Programming?

Yes. Tag-Connect describes hand-held TC2030 connection as ideal for production programming, and TC2030 cables are also used in custom test fixtures and bed-of-nails set-ups.

Tag-Connect reports that its spring pins last well over 100,000 operations in its own cycle testing, with the ribbon cable usually wearing out first.

  • How Does the ARM20-CTX Compare to More Expensive Solutions Like SEGGER J-Link BASE?

The ARM20-CTX is a passive adapter, not a debugger, so it does not replace a J-Link. It plugs onto a debugger's 0.1" 20-pin connector, such as a J-Link's, and connects it to a TC2030-IDC cable for SWD.

  • What Is the Difference Between ARM20-CTX and ARM20-CTX-M Adapters?

The two adapters differ in connector gender and in which debugger they suit.

    Debugger end20-pin 0.1 in female IDC20-pin 0.1 in male
SuitsDebuggers with a 20-pin 0.1 in male header, such as SEGGER J-LinkDebuggers whose 20-pin female ribbon cannot be removed

  • Can I Use Standard JTAG Signals with the ARM20-CTX Adapter?

No. The ARM20-CTX carries the SWD signals only. For full JTAG, including TDI, nTRST and RTCK, use the TC2050-ARM2010 adapter with 10-pin TC2050 cables.

  • What Technical Documentation Is Available for Implementing TC2030 Footprints?

Tag-Connect provides datasheets, PCB layout guidelines and CAD library files for TC2030 footprints. Debug Store supplies all relevant documentation with adapter purchases.

  • When Would I Use ARM20-CTX-M Instead?

Choose ARM20-CTX-M when your debugger’s 20-pin female ribbon can’t be removed or you need a male extension (e.g., Lauterbach).

  • What Debuggers Are Compatible with the ARM20-CTX Adapter?

It works with Arm SWD debuggers that have a standard 20-pin 0.1 in male IDC connector. Tag-Connect lists these probes:

    DebuggerWith ARM20-CTX?
    SEGGER J-LinkYes
    ST-LINK/V2Yes
STLINK-V3SETYes, via its 20-pin header (the MB1440 board adds it)
    STLINK-V3 and STLINK-V3MININo: they have the 14-pin 0.05 in STDC14 connector. Use TC2030-CTX-STDC14
    PEmicro Multilink ACP, Multilink Universal/FXYes
PEmicro Cyclone ARM, Cyclone LC/FX UniversalYes

  • Which ARM Microcontrollers Support the ARM20-CTX SWD Interface?

Most Arm Cortex-M microcontrollers support SWD, but check your part's datasheet, because a vendor can expose JTAG only (our advice). The adapter works with any target wired for SWD to a TC2030 footprint.

  • How Much PCB Space Does the TC2030 Footprint Require Compared to Traditional Connectors?

The TC2030 footprint is about the size of an 0805 resistor. Tag-Connect's space-saving figures depend on the footprint version:

FootprintSaving versus ARM 20-pin 0.1 in headerSaving versus 10-pin FTSH-105 header

    TC2030-NL (no legs)84%Over 66%

  • Can the ARM20-CTX Provide Power to Target Boards During Programming?

No. The ARM20-CTX carries only the SWD signals. Pin 1 (VCC) is passed through as the target voltage reference that the debugger senses, not as a supply.

Alternative. If you need the debugger to power the target, Tag-Connect's TC2050-ARM2010 adapter has a solder-bridge option for +5 V from the debugger on pin 19.

  • What Cables Are Required to Use the ARM20-CTX Adapter?

It needs a TC2030-IDC (legged) or TC2030-IDC-NL (no-legs) cable to connect to the target PCB. These are sold separately in Debug Store's Tag-Connect range.

See how to choose the correct Tag-Connect cable.

  • Does ARM20-CTX Carry All JTAG Signals?

No, it is intended for SWD. For full JTAG via Tag-Connect, use TC2050-ARM2010.
