Overview
The J-Link ULTRA+ (listed by SEGGER as J-Link Ultra) is a USB-C JTAG/SWD debug probe with up to 50 MHz target interface speed and download speeds up to 4 MB/s, against 15 MHz and 1 MB/s for the J-Link PLUS. It adds target power measurement at 200 kHz with 50µA resolution, includes J-Flash, Unlimited Flash Breakpoints, Ozone and RDI licences, and debugs Arm Cortex-M, Cortex-A and Cortex-R, RISC-V, Renesas RX and Microchip PIC32 targets at 1.2V to 5V. For Ethernet access see the J-Link PRO.
How It Connects
This J-Link uses SEGGER's standard 20-pin 0.1" (2.54 mm) JTAG/SWD connector, used on every J-Link except the J-Link EDU mini. For SWD you need VTref (pin 1), SWDIO (pin 7), SWCLK (pin 9), nRESET (pin 15) and GND (pin 4), plus SWO (pin 13) if you want trace output. Full JTAG, SWD, cJTAG and SPI pin tables, and the adapters for 10-pin 0.05" Cortex Debug headers: SEGGER J-Link 20-pin connector pinout.

Power Insight Built-In
The SEGGER J-Link ULTRA+ (part number 8.16.28, listed by SEGGER as J-Link Ultra) is a USB JTAG/SWD debug probe with up to 50 MHz target interface speed, download speeds up to 4 MB/s and a 1.2V to 5V target interface. It adds analogue power measurement at 200 kHz with 50µA resolution, and includes licences for J-Flash, Unlimited Flash Breakpoints, Ozone and RDI. It suits firmware teams who flash large images many times a day on Arm Cortex, RISC-V, Renesas RX and Microchip PIC32 targets and want to see current draw while they debug.
High-Speed JTAG/SWD Against the J-Link PLUS
SEGGER quotes up to 4 MB/s download speed and up to 50 MHz target interface speed for the ULTRA+, against up to 1 MB/s and 15 MHz for J-Link BASE and PLUS. SEGGER describes it as 100% compatible with J-Link PLUS, just faster, so existing J-Link projects and scripts carry over unchanged. Actual flash programming time depends on the target device. SWO is sampled at up to 100 MHz.
Power Measurement While You Debug
The ULTRA+ measures target current at a 200 kHz sampling frequency with 50µA resolution. On low-power designs that shows current spikes and sleep-mode entry during a debug session; with 50µA resolution it does not replace a dedicated meter for microamp sleep current. The probe can also supply the target with 5V at up to 300mA from the USB rail.
Interfaces, Supported Cores and Licences
The host link is USB 2.0 Hi-Speed over USB-C. The target uses the standard J-Link 20-pin 0.1" connector; pin assignments and adapters are in our SEGGER J-Link 20-pin connector pinout guide. Supported debug interfaces are JTAG, cJTAG, SWD, SWD multi-drop, SWO, SPI, Microchip ICSP, Renesas FINE and Silicon Labs C2. SEGGER's cores list covers Arm Cortex-M0 to Cortex-M85, Cortex-A and Cortex-R, legacy ARM7 to ARM11, RISC-V cores from SiFive, Andes, Codasip and Nuclei, Renesas RX, Microchip PIC32, Silicon Labs EFM8 and Cadence Tensilica Xtensa. J-Flash, Unlimited Flash Breakpoints, Ozone and RDI licences are included, along with RTT and VCOM (pins 5 and 17, SWD only).
Software and IDE Compatibility
J-Link software is free of charge, on Windows and Linux (x86-64 and Arm64) and macOS (x86-64 and Apple Silicon). SEGGER lists support in SEGGER Embedded Studio, Eclipse, IAR EWARM, Keil MDK-ARM, STM32CubeIDE, MCUXpresso and Visual Studio Code, among others.

Limitations
- USB only. For Ethernet access choose the J-Link PRO, or the J-Link PRO PoE for Power over Ethernet.
- The 50 MHz and 4 MB/s figures are maximums; the usable interface clock and flash programming rate depend on the target device.
- No ETM trace on Cortex-M (use SEGGER J-Trace) and no QSPI target interface.
- VCOM is available only when debugging over SWD.

Typical Applications
Repeated download of multi-megabyte images to Cortex-A or Cortex-M7 targets with external flash during development. Watching active current and wake-up spikes on an nRF or STM32L low-power design while stepping through code; microamp sleep current still needs a dedicated meter. Debug at 50 MHz SWD on fast Cortex-M33 parts where a 15 MHz probe is the bottleneck.
Choose the J-Link PRO or PRO PoE instead if the probe must sit on a network rather than a USB port.

-
Does ULTRA+ Include Unlimited Flash Breakpoints?
Yes, the licence is included, enabling more than the MCU’s hardware breakpoint limit when debugging in flash.
-
Can ULTRA+ Power a Target Board?
Yes, via the 20-pin header’s 5 V output (up to 300 mA), useful for small targets and evaluation boards.
-
Is SWO Supported for Real-Time Logs?
Yes. SWO is supported (with high sampling rates) for printf-style logging and event tracing on supported MCUs.
-
Which Tool Should I Choose If I Need Ethernet and Remote Use?
Consider the SEGGER J-Link PRO for Ethernet and remote workflows.
-
Does J-Link ULTRA+ Support My Arm Cortex-M Target?
Yes, it supports a wide range of ARM Cortex devices and more. Check the official supported devices list for specifics.
-
How Fast Is Flash Programming with ULTRA+ in Practice?
The probe supports downloads up to 4 MB/s into RAM. Actual speed depends on the MCU, flash and memory algorithm performance.
-
Is ETM Instruction Trace Available on ULTRA+?
No. For ETM streaming trace and code coverage, use the SEGGER J-Trace PRO.
-
How Is ULTRA+ Different From J-Link PLUS?
The ULTRA+ is 100% compatible with the J-Link PLUS but adds higher speed and power measurement. Both include the J-Link software ecosystem.
-
How Does ULTRA+ Compare to Lauterbach Tools?
Lauterbach is a third-party manufacturer, so refer to its documentation for its trace features. ULTRA+ focuses on fast JTAG/SWD debug with integrated power profiling and does not provide ETM instruction trace (that needs a J-Trace).
