Oscium WiPry and Wi-Spy: RF spectrum analysers for Wi-Fi and IoT

Oscium WiPry and Wi-Spy are portable RF spectrum analysers that connect to a PC, Mac, phone or tablet. The host device shows what is transmitting on the air, so an engineer can find Wi-Fi interference, plan channels or check sub-GHz IoT links without a bench analyser. The range covers 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 6 GHz Wi-Fi bands as well as 755 to 928 MHz IoT bands.

What an Oscium spectrum analyser does

An Oscium analyser turns a host device into a real-time RF spectrum display. The Wi-Spy Lucid, WiPry 2500x and WiPry 790x are small USB-connected receivers: an antenna feeds the analyser, and Oscium or MetaGeek software on the host shows signal level against frequency, a waterfall history and channel utilisation.

The analyser is the RF front end; the software on the host device does the display and reporting.

Which frequency bands does each model cover?

Band coverage is the main way to choose between the models. The WiPry 790x covers sub-GHz IoT bands from 755 to 928 MHz, the WiPry 2500x covers the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi bands, and the Wi-Spy Lucid adds the 6 GHz band for Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7.

The Lucid hardware tunes 2.2 to 7.25 GHz; its software displays the three Wi-Fi bands shown in green.

Oscium spectrum analysers at a glance

WiPry-Clarity	2.2 to 7.25 GHz hardware; shows 2.4, 5 and 5.925 to 7.125 GHz	USB 2.0	Windows 8+, macOS	Previous generation, superseded by the Lucid
WiPry 2500x	2.4 to 2.495 GHz and 5.15 to 5.85 GHz	Lightning, USB (Android), PC and Mac	iOS, Android, Windows, macOS	Real Wave and Waterfall views, Zigbee channel guide
WiPry 790x	755 to 928 MHz (regional bands)	Lightning, USB-C and USB-A cables supplied	iOS, Android, Windows, macOS	-100 to -20 dBm, free WiPry app

Accessories in this catalogue include the WiFi Interference Finder (OSC2100), a directional antenna, plus the SMD Grabbers and the Conducted Measurement Kit. Oscium lists the Conducted Measurement Kit for its WiPry-Power and WiPry-Combo analysers, which we do not stock.

Software

The Lucid works with Chanalyzer, Oscium's spectrum visualisation software with a Report Builder, and a free Chanalyzer Lite is also available. Oscium lists compatibility with Hamina, WiFi Explorer Pro and TamoGraph Site Survey. The WiPry 790x and 2500x use the free WiPry app on iOS and Android, with PC and Mac software also supplied.

Typical applications

Finding Wi-Fi interference from microwave ovens, cordless phones, baby monitors and wireless cameras
Channel planning and site surveys on 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 6 GHz networks (Wi-Spy Lucid)
Sub-GHz IoT link checks: smart meters, Z-Wave, LoRa and SigFox (WiPry 790x)
Locating a transmitter with a directional antenna (WiFi Interference Finder (OSC2100))

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the Wi-Spy Lucid and the WiPry-Clarity?

Both cover 2.2 to 7.25 GHz in hardware with 25 kHz frequency resolution. The Wi-Spy Lucid is the current Oscium tri-band model and connects over USB-C, while the WiPry-Clarity is the previous generation and is listed as superseded by the Lucid.

Do I need a software subscription?

For the Wi-Spy Lucid, Oscium lists Chanalyzer for full features and a free Chanalyzer Lite; the Spectrum Bundle (SPB-2025) includes a Chanalyzer licence and one year of MetaCare support. For the WiPry 790x, Oscium states the WiPry app is free, with no licensing or subscription fees.

Which model do I need for Zigbee, LoRa or smart meter work?

The WiPry 790x covers 755 to 928 MHz with regional band selection, and Oscium positions it for Z-Wave, smart meters, LoRa, SigFox and IEEE 802.15.4g devices. For 2.4 GHz Zigbee (IEEE 802.15.4), the WiPry 2500x and the Wi-Spy Lucid both cover the 2.4 GHz band.

Can I use an Oscium analyser with an iPhone or Android phone?

The WiPry 790x and WiPry 2500x are the phone and tablet models: the 790x ships with Lightning, USB-C and USB-A cables, and the 2500x supports iOS, Android, Windows and macOS. The Wi-Spy Lucid lists Windows 8 or later and macOS 10.14 or later.

Which model covers Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7?

The Wi-Spy Lucid and WiPry-Clarity display the 5.925 to 7.125 GHz band used by Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7, alongside 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. The WiPry 2500x covers 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz only.

How do I locate the source of interference?

Fit the WiFi Interference Finder (OSC2100), a directional tri-band antenna with an RP-SMA connector and 6 dBi gain per Oscium, to a Wi-Spy Lucid. Point it at the suspected source and watch the signal level in Chanalyzer's Device Finder mode. The Spectrum Bundle (SPB-2025) includes this antenna.
