Artila: Linux ARM computers and serial gateways for industrial IoT

Artila Electronics (Taiwan) makes Linux-ready ARM computers, programmable automation controllers and serial-to-Ethernet gateways for industrial and IoT use. The Matrix series are compact box computers (several with a DIN-mount option) with serial ports, Ethernet and GPIO, the M-series are system-on-modules and single board computers for building your own product, and the Aport and SE/WE modules turn RS-232, RS-422 and RS-485 devices into network nodes. Artila bundles an open-source GNU C/C++ cross-compiler with its Linux products, so you can write and deploy your own application.

What an Artila gateway does

An Artila Matrix computer or Aport gateway connects serial and digital I/O devices to an Ethernet network. A Matrix box such as the Matrix-512 runs Linux, so your own program can poll meters, PLCs and sensors on its RS-232, RS-422 or RS-485 ports and pass the data on over TCP/IP. An Aport such as the Aport-312 is simpler: it gives a transparent data channel between a serial device and the TCP/IP network, with no programming.

Serial devices and digital I/O in, Ethernet out: the Artila gateway sits between the field and the network.

From source code to a running Artila computer

You develop for a Matrix computer by cross-compiling on a PC and copying the executable across the network. Artila supplies a GNU C/C++ tool chain for Windows and Linux hosts. In the Matrix-500 user guide the executable is sent by FTP to the user disk (/disk), made executable with chmod and run from the shell; SSH login is also supported.

Write and build on the PC, then deploy to the Artila computer over the network.

Choosing between Matrix, M-series and Aport

Choose a Matrix computer when you need to run your own code, an M-series module when you are designing Artila's CPU into your own product, and an Aport when you only need to put a serial device on the network.

Matrix: the Matrix-500 is 78 x 108 x 24 mm with a DIN-mount option. The Matrix-512, Matrix-514 and Matrix-510 are larger (160 x 104 x 32 mm) with more Ethernet or serial ports and 21 GPIO.
PAC-5070: the PAC-5070 adds analog inputs and isolated digital I/O to the Linux platform, with a pre-installed web server for remote monitoring.
M-series: the M-501 and M-5360A are system-on-modules, and the M-508 is a 105 x 75 mm single board computer with four serial ports and 32 GPIO. The M-606 is the Windows CE counterpart of the M-506.
Aport and modules: the Aport gateways and the SE-100M, SE-110S and WE-200M modules offer TCP server, TCP client and UDP operation for RS-232, RS-422 and RS-485 devices.

Software and tools

Linux: Matrix and M-series products ship with Linux pre-installed; kernel version depends on the model (for example 2.6.14 on the Matrix-500 and M-501, 2.6.38 on the M-506), with a U-Boot bootloader on the Matrix units; the M-501 and M-506 also include the BusyBox utilities.
Tool chain: a GNU C/C++ cross-compiler and POSIX C library, for Windows or Linux PCs.
Network services: the Matrix-500 includes the Boa web server, SSH, FTP, Telnet and SNMP agent.
Serial gateways: the Aport-312 includes a Windows Virtual COM driver and 64 KB of user web space; the Aport-211S is configured through a web, Telnet or serial console.

Mounting and wiring accessories include the DIN Rail Mounting Kit and the CB-DB2CON-100, CB-PHDF9-050 and CB-RJ2CON-100 console cables.

Typical applications

Data acquisition and protocol conversion in factory automation, using a Matrix-512 or Matrix-500 as the gateway
Adding Ethernet to RS-232, RS-422 or RS-485 instruments with an Aport-211S or Aport-312
Remote monitoring and control with analog and isolated digital I/O on the PAC-5070
Intelligent transportation, building automation and energy-saving systems built on the M-501 or M-506
Embedding a Linux CPU module in your own product design

Frequently asked questions

Does the Artila Matrix run Linux?

Yes. The Matrix-500, Matrix-512 and Matrix-514 run Linux 2.6.14 on a 180 MHz Atmel AT91RM9200 Arm9 processor, with a GNU C/C++ tool chain for your own applications.

How do I load my own program onto a Matrix computer?

Cross-compile it on a PC with the supplied GNU tool chain, copy it to the unit over Ethernet with FTP (SSH login is also supported), set the executable bit with chmod and run it. See the user guide for your model.

What is the difference between a Matrix computer and an Aport?

A Matrix such as the Matrix-512 is a general-purpose Linux computer you program yourself. An Aport such as the Aport-312 is a serial-to-Ethernet gateway that passes serial data to a TCP/IP network without programming.

Which serial standards do Artila products support?

RS-232, RS-422 and RS-485. On the Matrix-512 all four ports are software-selectable between the three, and on the Aport-211S the mode is switch-selectable.

Can Artila products be DIN-rail mounted?

Yes. The Matrix-500 and Matrix-514 are listed as DIN-mount, and the DIN Rail Mounting Kit is available. Check the product page for your model.

Which Artila product suits a custom product design?

The system-on-modules, such as the M-501 (80 x 50 mm, 4 UARTs, 32 GPIO), carry the Linux CPU, memory and Ethernet on a small board for you to design in. The M-502-Start kit is for evaluating the M-502 module.
