Overview
The TC2050-IDC-SOFT is the soft-squeeze version of the TC2050-IDC: a 10-conductor legged Plug-of-Nails cable with a spring-pin Tag-Connector at one end and a standard 0.1-inch ribbon connector at the other. It suits many MCUs, FPGAs and JTAG programming and debug tools.
The board needs only a small pattern of pads and locating holes, about the size of two or three SMT resistors, so it can sit right next to the MCU. Nothing is fitted, so there is no connector cost per board, and the spring pins are rated for over 100,000 operations.
Soft-squeeze cables are made for frequent production use: the side squeeze-tabs are easier on operators' fingers, and they can also help in very low humidity or low temperatures, where squeeze-tabs can be stiffer. An accidental tug can disconnect them, so they are not recommended for debugging and development, and they are not recommended for humid environments.

Which TC2050-IDC Cable?
| Cable | Target end | Tool end | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| TC2050-IDC | Legged, standard squeeze tabs | 10-pin 0.1-inch IDC | JTAG debugging and production programming |
| TC2050-IDC-SOFT (this cable) | Legged, soft squeeze tabs | 10-pin 0.1-inch IDC | Frequent production programming; not for debugging or humid environments |
| TC2050-IDC-NL | No legs, smaller footprint; held by hand or with a TC2050-CLIP | 10-pin 0.1-inch IDC | Production programming with brief connections, where board space matters most |
| TC2050-IDC-050-ALL-SOFT | Legged, soft squeeze tabs | 10-pin 0.05-inch IDC, all 10 pins | Production programming with Samtec FTSH-105 style 0.05-inch tools |

Questions and Answers
-
What Is the Difference From the TC2050-IDC?
The soft-squeeze version has softer side squeeze-tabs, designed for frequent production use and easier on operators' fingers. Tag-Connect publishes the same TC2050-IDC datasheet for both cables, so the PCB footprint is the TC2050 legged footprint; see the datasheet below.
-
Can I Use It for Debugging?
It is not recommended. An accidental tug can disconnect a soft-squeeze cable. Use the standard TC2050-IDC for debugging and development.
-
How Many Connections Will the Spring Pins Take?
The spring pins are rated for over 100,000 operations.
-
How Much Board Space Does the Footprint Need?
The legged footprint takes about the same space as two or three SMT resistors. The TC2050-IDC datasheet below gives the dimensions.
