Overview

The SEGGER J-Link BASE Classic (order no. 8.08.00) is a USB-powered JTAG/SWD debug probe delivering download speeds up to 1 MB/s with a maximum target interface speed of 15 MHz and SWO sampling up to 30 MHz. It supports a very broad range of microcontrollers, including Arm® Cortex-M/R/A, legacy Arm7/9/11 and RISC-V targets. J-Link software is multi-platform (Windows, macOS, Linux) and works with all major IDEs.

All J-Links include built-in VCOM (virtual COM port) and SEGGER’s Real Time Transfer (RTT) for high-speed debug I/O without impacting real-time behaviour. Firmware and software updates are provided free of charge.

Form Factors & Upgrade Path

J-Link BASE is available as Classic (this page) and BASE Compact with identical functionality. If you later need features such as Unlimited Flash Breakpoints, J-Flash, or Ozone, add the BASE→PLUS Upgrade or consider J-Link PLUS Classic or J-Link PRO.

Why Consider J-Link BASE?

It balances capability and cost: rapid downloads, wide device/IDE coverage, RTT/VCOM utilities, and a clear upgrade path. Engineers standardise on J-Link to cover multiple vendors and toolchains while keeping workflows consistent across projects.

Standardise Across Projects

One probe spans Arm and RISC-V devices and major IDEs, removing vendor lock-in and simplifying lab provisioning and support.

Efficient Debug I/O

RTT and VCOM deliver fast, low-overhead logging and console access without extra hardware, keeping targets responsive during testing.

Future-Proof Path

Start affordable, upgrade to PLUS when needed for unlimited flash breakpoints, production flash programming and the Ozone debugger.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have a Question?

Ask a Question
  • Can I replace my old Macraigor Wiggler or Demon with J-Link BASE Classic for debugging?

Yes. The SEGGER J-Link BASE Classic is a modern, USB-powered JTAG/SWD probe that fully replaces legacy parallel-port devices like the Macraigor Wiggler or Demon. It offers faster downloads, broader device support and compatibility with current IDEs on Windows, macOS and Linux.

  • What if I later need production flash programming?

Add the BASE→PLUS licence to gain J-Flash (and other tools) or choose a higher model.

  • Is Ethernet or a web interface available on BASE?

No. BASE is USB-only. Network/web interfaces are features of higher-end J-Link models like PRO.

  • Does it work on macOS and Linux as well as Windows?

Yes. J-Link software is multi-platform with installers for Windows, macOS and Linux.

  • Can the BASE Classic power the target?

Yes. It can provide 5 V target supply (derived from USB) up to 300 mA; verify your board power requirements.

  • How does it compare with more expensive debug probes?

Higher-end probes (e.g., ULINKplus, IAR I-jet) add features like power measurement, isolation, or streaming trace. BASE focuses on core debug at lower cost.

  • Can I use J-Link BASE with open-source tools (GDB/OpenOCD)

Yes. J-Link integrates with GDB-based IDEs and is commonly used with OpenOCD-based toolchains.

  • Is RTT available on J-Link BASE?

Yes. RTT is available on all J-Links and provides high-speed, low-intrusion logging via the debug connection

  • Does J-Link BASE include Unlimited Flash Breakpoints, J-Flash or Ozone?

Not with BASE. These are included with higher models or enabled by purchasing the J-Link BASE→PLUS upgrade licence.

  • How fast is programming and what are the signal limits?

Up to 1 MB/s download to RAM with a maximum 15 MHz target interface and SWO sampling up to 30 MHz, subject to target/IDE limits.

  • What MCUs does the SEGGER J-Link BASE Classic support?

It supports a very wide range of Arm cores (Cortex-M/R/A and legacy ARM7/9/11) and RISC-V devices listed in SEGGER’s supported-devices database.
