Overview

Leap LER-123A UV EPROM Eraser: Professional Memory Management Solution

The Leap LER-123A represents the gold standard in UV EPROM erasing technology, delivering reliable performance for electronic design engineers maintaining legacy systems. This professional-grade unit accommodates up to 64 EPROM devices (24-pin × 0.6") in its spacious anti-static foam-lined tray, making it ideal for development environments and production applications.

Constructed with robust steel housing, the LER-123A features a powerful 10W mercury vapour UV tube operating at the optimal 253.7nm wavelength for complete memory erasure. The integrated electronic starter extends tube life whilst ensuring consistent performance. A precision mechanical timer provides adjustable exposure from 0-60 minutes, with typical erasure completing in approximately 15 minutes.

Enhanced Safety Features

User protection is paramount with automatic UV shut-off when the drawer opens, preventing accidental exposure to harmful radiation. An LED status indicator confirms tube operation, whilst the sealed construction contains all UV emissions within the unit.

Essential for embedded development, legacy system maintenance, and prototype work, the LER-123A ensures your valuable EPROM inventory remains functional and reprogrammable. Its compact footprint (37cm × 18cm × 10cm) fits comfortably on any workbench whilst delivering industrial-grade reliability.

Legacy System Maintenance

Essential for reprogramming vintage EPROM chips in industrial control systems and embedded applications.

Cost-Effective Memory Management

Enables reuse of expensive EPROM inventory reducing project costs compared to purchasing new devices.

Reliable Professional Operation

Delivers consistent erasure results with safety features and timer control for unattended operation.

Anti-Static Foam Lined Tray

Devices to be erased are inserted into an anti-static foam-lined pull out drawer. The size of the UV EPROM Eraser tray (which is fitted with anti-static foam) is 26.5cm x 15cm (capable of holding up to 24 x 24-pin x 0.6" devices). The tray is fitted with anti-static foam to protect the devices being erased from electrostatic damage.

UV Tube

The tube is fitted with an electronic starter which helps to extend the tube life and an LED to indicate when the eraser is operating. An auto cut-off switch is fitted as a safety feature to extinguish the UV lamp when the device drawer is opened.

AC Mains Powered

An ac mains power adapter is always included with the LER-123A, fitted with a EU or UK plug (depending on delivery address). This is often not the case. A larger model, the is also available. Leap Electronic is the original manufacturer of the LER-123A.

Engineer Q&A

Questions and Answers

8 questions
  • Does the LER-123A Work with Modern EEPROM or Flash Memory Devices?
No. The LER-123A is for UV-erasable EPROMs with quartz windows. EEPROM and flash devices erase electrically and can't be erased with UV light.
Answered by John LeggUpdated 12 Sep 2025
  • What Maintenance Does the UV Tube Require in the LER-123A?
Replace the 10W UV tube approximately every 2,000 hours of operation, or annually. The electronic starter helps extend tube life compared with conventional starters.
Answered by John LeggUpdated 12 Sep 2025
  • Can the LER-123A Erase Multiple EPROM Types Simultaneously?
Yes, as long as they all need similar exposure times. All devices get uniform UV exposure across the whole erasure area.
Answered by John LeggUpdated 12 Sep 2025
  • Will Room Lighting or Sunlight Affect EPROMs Stored Near the LER-123A?
No, normal indoor lighting poses no risk. Direct sunlight can erase EPROMs over weeks, so keep the protective labels on EPROM windows unless you're erasing them. The LER-123A's sealed construction prevents any UV leakage.
Answered by John LeggUpdated 12 Sep 2025
  • What Accessories Are Included with the LER-123A EPROM Eraser?
The LER-123A comes with the main unit, user manual and AC power cord. The anti-static foam tray comes pre-installed and the 10W UV tube factory-fitted, ready to use on delivery.
Answered by John LeggUpdated 12 Sep 2025
  • How Long Does It Take to Completely Erase an EPROM with the LER-123A?
Typically about 15 minutes. You can set exposure from 0 to 60 minutes depending on chip type and erasure needs. The 10W UV tube works at the optimal 253.7nm wavelength for complete erasure.
Answered by John LeggUpdated 12 Sep 2025
  • What Types of EPROM Packages Can the LER-123A Accommodate?

    The tray holds up to:

    • 64 devices in 24-pin packages
    • 50 devices in 32-pin packages
    • 40 devices in 40-pin packages

The anti-static foam tray measures 26.5cm × 15cm and takes standard 0.6" pitch devices.

Answered by John LeggUpdated 12 Sep 2025
  • Is the LER-123A Safe to Operate in Office Environments?
Yes. UV shuts off automatically when the drawer opens, the steel housing fully contains the UV, and an LED shows status. This prevents accidental exposure to UV radiation.
