Questions and Answers
-
What Is the Actual Bandwidth and Sampling Rate Performance of the Logic 8?
Digital sampling is 100 MS/s on up to 3 channels, 50 MS/s on up to 6 channels, or 25 MS/s on all 8. Maximum digital bandwidth is 25 MHz, enough for most embedded work, including USB Full Speed, moderate-speed SPI and general microcontroller debugging.
Analogue sampling is up to 10 MS/s (on up to 2 channels) with 1 MHz bandwidth and 10-bit resolution. The USB 2.0 interface handles these rates while streaming in real time to your computer's memory.
-
Does the Logic 8 Software Work Without the Hardware for Analysis and Sharing?
Partly. Without the hardware, the Logic 2 software runs in Demo Mode on simulated data and opens saved captures, so you can analyse earlier captures, share recordings and demonstrate protocol behaviour.
Save complete capture sessions and send them to other engineers, who can open and analyse them in the free software without owning the hardware. This helps with collaborative debugging, remote troubleshooting, technical support and documentation.
-
What Warranty and Support Does Saleae Provide for the Logic 8?
Logic 8 has a 3-year warranty, valid wherever you bought it and with no receipt needed, with all warranty service handled directly by Saleae. Saleae provides online documentation, community forums and technical support.
-
Can I Extend Logic 8's Capabilities with Custom Protocol Analysers?
Yes. The Protocol Analyzer SDK and Extensions let you create custom low-level protocol analysers, high-level analysers and measurement extensions. High-level analysers are written in Python and low-level decoders in C++.
The Saleae community has contributed many extensions for specialised protocols, and Saleae provides documentation and templates for building analysers for proprietary protocols or specific measurement needs.
-
Is the Logic 8 Suitable for Professional Embedded Development Work?
Yes, for general embedded debugging. Real-time streaming to your PC's memory gives long captures, so you are less likely to miss events than with an analyser that has a small fixed buffer.
Simultaneous digital and analogue capture lets you correlate protocol activity with the analogue signal behind it, and the compact, USB-powered aluminium unit suits both lab and field work.
-
What Are the Best Applications for the Logic 8 Analyser?
Logic 8 is an all-purpose mixed-signal recorder, protocol decoder and automated test probe. Typical uses:
- firmware bugs
- mixed-signal glitches
- checks on slow-moving power rails (1 MHz analogue bandwidth, 0 to 5 V range)
- reverse engineering
-
What Makes the Saleae Logic 8 Different From Traditional Logic Analysers?
Logic 8 streams data in real time to your computer's RAM, so capture length is limited by your PC's memory rather than a fixed hardware buffer. It's a portable USB device with professional capabilities, and its dual-purpose inputs capture digital and analogue signals at the same time.
Instead of the complex button interfaces of traditional analysers, it uses a cross-platform application with built-in protocol decoders and community extensions.
-
How Does Streaming Capture to PC Memory Work on the Logic 8?
Logic 8 streams captured data over USB to your computer's RAM in real time, so there's no fixed hardware buffer. Capture length is limited by available system memory and how dense the recorded data is.
That lets you capture long sequences or rare intermittent events that a fixed hardware buffer would miss.
-
Can the Logic 8 Simultaneously Capture Digital and Analogue Signals on the Same Channels?
Yes. All 8 channels can be set as digital, analogue or both at once, so you can correlate digital protocol activity with the analogue signal behind it. Digital sampling runs at up to 100 MS/s and analogue at up to 10 MS/s with 10-bit resolution and 1 MHz bandwidth. The top rates apply to fewer channels, and mixed captures share the USB bandwidth.
-
What Protocol Decoders Are Included with the Logic 8?
Logic 8 has built-in protocol analysers including:
- SPI
- I2C
- Serial (UART)
- 1-Wire
- CAN
- I2S
- JTAG
- LIN
- Manchester
- MDIO
- MIDI
- Modbus
- SMBus
- USB (Low Speed and Full Speed)
- HDMI-CEC
- HD44780
- HDLC
- DMX-512
You can add community-contributed extensions or write your own protocol analysers.
-
How Many Channels Does Logic 8 Provide, and Can They Record Both Digital and Analog Signals?
Logic 8 has eight dual-purpose inputs, and yes, each can be set as a digital channel, an analogue channel or both at once. That gives up to 8 digital + 8 analogue inputs in one capture.
-
What Signal Voltages Are Supported and How Well Is the Hardware Protected?
Digital inputs read logic-low below 0.6 V and logic-high above 1.2 V, so you can probe 1.8 V to 5 V systems directly. All inputs are protected against continuous voltages from -25 V to +25 V.
-
Which Operating Systems and Host Hardware Work with Logic 8 Software?
The free Logic 2 software runs on Windows 10/11, macOS 12 Monterey or later, and Ubuntu 20.04+ (64-bit) and other modern Linux distros. Logic 8 needs only a USB 2.0 port (faster hosts allow longer captures). PCs need an SSE2-capable CPU (virtually all processors released since 2001).
-
What Comes in the Box, and Do I Need Anything Else to Start Capturing?
You get:
- Logic 8 unit
- two 4-channel wire harnesses, with a ground lead for each channel
- 16 micro-grabber test clips
- USB cable
- carrying case
That's everything you need to plug into your PC and start measuring, once you've downloaded the free software.
