Wiring Quick-Start

RS-485 Terminal Block Connections

Connect the RS-485 lines using twisted pair cable:

 Terminal A (Data+) → RS-485 A line Terminal B (Data-) → RS-485 B line Terminal GND → Signal ground
Important: Install 120Ω termination resistors at both ends of the RS-485 network for optimal signal integrity.

Multidrop Network Configuration

The 3313 converter enables PC connection to multiple Array Electronic devices in a daisy-chain topology. Each device requires a unique address (0-254) for individual control and monitoring. The differential signalling provides excellent noise immunity in industrial environments.

Compatible with Array Electronic:

  • 3710A/3711A Electronic Loads
  • 3644A/3645A/3646A Power Supplies
  • 364XA Series DC Power Supplies
  • 371X Series Programmable Loads

Installation Notes

The converter requires no external power supply when connected to a standard PC serial port. The optical isolation protects connected equipment from ground loops and voltage spikes. LED indicators show power and communication status for easy troubleshooting.

RTS control enables automatic transmit/receive switching for half-duplex operation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have a Question?

Ask a Question
  • What protection features are included?

The converter includes optical isolation to prevent ground loops, overcurrent protection, and ESD protection. LED indicators show power and communication status for easy diagnostics.

  • How do I troubleshoot communication problems?

Check LED indicators for power and activity status. Verify termination resistors are installed at network ends. Ensure proper RS-485 polarity (A to A, B to B) and unique device addresses.

  • Can I use the 3313 with non-Array Electronic equipment?

The converter will work with any RS-485 device using standard protocols, though it's optimised for Array Electronic instruments. Ensure compatible communication parameters and addressing schemes.

  • What baud rates are supported?

The converter supports standard baud rates from 300 bps up to 115.2 kbps. Higher speeds work best over shorter distances, whilst lower speeds provide more reliable communication over maximum range.

  • How do I configure device addresses on the network?

Each Array Electronic instrument has address configuration through its menu system. Press SHIFT + RS-232/485 to access communication settings and assign unique addresses from 000 to 254.

  • What is the maximum communication distance?

The RS-485 interface supports distances up to 1200 metres (4000 feet) at standard baud rates. Higher speeds may require shorter distances following the rule: speed × distance ≤ 10^8 bits/second × metres.

  • Does the 3313 require external power?

No, the converter draws power directly from the PC's RS-232 port (DTR and RTS lines). This port-powered design eliminates external power supply requirements and simplifies installation.

  • What cable type should I use for RS-485 connections?

Use twisted pair cable with 120Ω characteristic impedance. Install 120Ω termination resistors at both network ends. For distances over 100 metres, use shielded twisted pair cable with proper grounding.

  • How many devices can be connected to a single 3313 converter?

The converter supports up to 32 devices on a single RS-485 network. Each device must have a unique address (0-254) configured through its front panel or software interface.

  • What Array Electronic devices are compatible with the 3313 converter?

The 3313 is specifically designed for Array Electronic loads and power supplies including the 3710A/3711A electronic loads, 3644A/3645A/3646A power supplies, and 364XA/371X series instruments. Each device requires unique addressing for multidrop operation.
