JTAG and BDM debug interfaces: usb2Demon, Raven and Wiggler

Macraigor Systems makes JTAG and BDM hardware debug interfaces: the usb2Demon, Raven and Wiggler families, plus the OCDemon software that drives them. An interface connects a PC to the on-chip debug port of a target processor, so an engineer can halt the CPU, read and write registers and memory, set breakpoints and program flash without a ROM monitor or code running on the target. The interfaces work with free Macraigor tools and GNU GDB, and with third-party debuggers.

How a Macraigor debug chain works

A Macraigor interface sits between the debugger on your PC and the on-chip debug (OCD) port of the target processor. The debugger, either Macraigor's OCD Commander or GNU GDB in an IDE such as Eclipse, talks to the interface through the OCDemon technology. For GDB and Eclipse, OCDRemote provides the interface between the debugger and the Macraigor device. The interface then drives the target's JTAG or BDM header.

The debugger never talks to the processor directly: OCDRemote and the interface translate its commands into JTAG or BDM signals.

What JTAG debug does: the scan chain

JTAG (IEEE 1149.1) gives a debug tool access to a processor through four signals: TCK (clock), TMS (mode select), TDI (data in) and TDO (data out). Devices on a board are daisy-chained: the interface's TDI feeds the first device, each TDO feeds the next TDI, and the last TDO returns to the interface, while TCK and TMS are shared by all. The usb2Demon can debug up to 255 devices on a single scan chain, and up to 16 usb2Demons can be connected to one host PC.

Data shifts through every device in turn, so one interface can reach each processor on the chain.

The catalogue also lists adapters and accessories: the Cortex JTAG Adapter, which lets a 20-pin ARM interface connect to an ARM Cortex SWD 2-wire interface, the Intel/Marvel JTAG Adapter, the JScan Boundary Scan Kit and a Replacement Programmed PAL for WBDM8XX. usb2Demon, Raven or Wiggler: which interface?

The usb2Demon is the fast, USB-powered choice, the Raven and Wiggler are older parallel-port devices. The usb2Demon connects by USB 1.1 or USB 2.0, takes its power from USB, supports configurable JTAG/BDM clock rates up to 20 MHz and automatically matches target voltages from 2.2 V to 5.0 V. Macraigor describes it as significantly faster than a Raven. The Raven connects through the PC parallel port and is powered from a mains adapter. The Wiggler also connects to the parallel port, supports JTAG clock rates between about 60 kHz and 380 kHz, and can be powered from an external 5 V supply, from the parallel port, or partly from the target. Because both older devices need a parallel port, the usb2Demon suits modern PCs.

Supported processor architectures

usb2Demon: Macraigor lists AMD, ARM, Atom, ColdFire, CPU32 series, PowerPC, MIPS and XScale, from vendors including AMCC, Broadcom, Freescale, IBM, Intel, Microchip, Phillips, Qualcomm, Sharp and TI.
Target ports: JTAG, E-JTAG, OnCE, COP and BDM on-chip debug interfaces.
Wiggler: ARM, PowerPC, MIPS, AMD and Intel XScale among others, according to the Wiggler datasheet.
Intel Atom: OCDemon for the Atom covers hardware initialisation and debug, plus kernel, driver and application debug over JTAG.

Support depends on the connector variant, so choose the model that matches your target's debug header (for example the 24-pin or 31-pin Atom, or COP).

Software and tools

OCD Commander: Macraigor's free debugger and diagnostic tool for Windows and Linux.
OCDRemote: provides the interface between GDB or Eclipse and a Macraigor on-chip debug device.
GNU tools and GDB: Macraigor distributes free GNU toolkit builds (gcc, gas and gdb) with embedded OCDemon support, and has published guides for using its devices with Eclipse on Windows and Linux.
OCD Flash Programmer: a flash programming application for use with the interfaces.
Third-party debuggers: the usb2Demon is documented as compatible with debuggers from vendors such as Green Hills, IAR Systems, Metrowerks and Mentor Graphics.
