Professional Automotive Ignition Diagnostics
The Hantek HT25COP is a specialised capacitive probe designed for non-intrusive testing of coil-on-plug (COP) ignition systems. This professional diagnostic tool enables engineers to capture secondary ignition waveforms directly from the ignition coil without requiring cable extensions or system modifications.
Advanced Coil-on-Plug Testing
Modern vehicles increasingly use COP ignition systems where individual coils mount directly onto spark plugs, eliminating traditional high-voltage spark plug wires. The HT25COP probe addresses this diagnostic challenge by coupling magnetically to the coil's electromagnetic field, enabling oscilloscope analysis of the ignition waveform.
Technical Operation
The probe operates through capacitive coupling, detecting the high-voltage discharge patterns within the ignition coil. When connected to an oscilloscope via the standard BNC connector, engineers can analyse:
- Firing line voltage and duration
- Spark burn time and intensity
- Coil oscillations and decay patterns
- Misfire detection and timing anomalies
Wiring Quick-Start
Connection requires no vehicle modification:
- Connect BNC plug to oscilloscope Channel A
- Attach ground clip to engine earth point
- Position probe sensor against target ignition coil
- Configure oscilloscope: 5-15kV range, 10-20ms timebase
- Set trigger: rising edge, 2-4kV threshold
Diagnostic Applications
Condition | Waveform Indication |
---|---|
Normal Operation | Clean firing line, consistent burn time 1.5-2ms |
Misfire | Reduced or absent firing line, extended oscillations |
Carbon Tracking | Multiple firing events, erratic burn patterns |
Lean Mixture | Increased firing voltage, shortened burn time |
Compatibility
Compatible with most automotive oscilloscopes featuring BNC inputs. Works effectively with Hantek automotive scopes, PicoScope units, and other professional diagnostic equipment. The 2-metre cable length provides sufficient reach for most engine bay configurations.
